Anime: “Sword Art Online ” Review

We went into this anime with no expectations, hope for the best…expect the worst. But the anime turned out be to extremely good. very good story, nice character development, and all around great animation. This is an anime that is based off the manga of the same name.

Without going into too many details or spoilers, the story is set in the year 2022 and is about a brand new virtual reality MMORPG game called SOA (Sword Art Online). Like every game, people are trying it for the first time and all of the players discovered that they are unable to log out of the game. Then the creator of the game appears and states that if the players die in the game, then they will die in the real world. And the only way to log off and come back to the real world is to reach the 100th floor and defeat the final boss.

The story basically revolves around the characters Asuna and Kirito. Both characters are quite powerful and they fall in love and even have a kid together (years pass in the game…long story on the child).  There are 2 arcs to the 25 episode anime. The first is the SOA arc and the second is the ALfheim Online arc.

I really don’t want to go into details on the story (people don’t like spoilers) but I will say this: If you like MMORPG’s, then you will love this anime. It really gives you that vibe of playing a game, from the pop up menus next to the characters, to the skill sets of cooking, killing monsters and level grinding! Watching this anime will put you in the mood to turn on the PC and start paying a MMORPG. Heck, this game really put us in the mood to play Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn when it releases next year(But right now I’m playing Guild Wars 2)!

Anyway, we highly recommend watching this anime. They have is available on crunchyroll.com (great place for anime). Tell us what you think about it, we would love to hear your thoughts!

  1. Iv’e watched this anime. And it certainly is a wonderful one.
2012 anime’s like SAO, Accel world are based on techies. Where people can have a virtual life within the games. I, as -still a kid, enjoys watching fantasy anime’s and movies. that make it seems like i’m one of the characters enjoying a life such as theirs. id wish to have those gadgets if ever they exist. xD

*May i ask your rating for this anime? five stars as the highest and why?
*Do you guys know of more anime’s that have the same genre such as SAO and Accel World?

~thanks for the awesome review. :))

    • We would rate this anime an 8 out of 10 simply because we would have liked to see the other two arcs made into the show.
I would be so awesome to have the tech to play games like that. I (Mike) would be a arcane knight (Magic and strength) and Elio would be a Mage.

You should try Fate/Stay Night, .Hack series, and Star Ocean Ex. Those are some really good anime’s to watch! 🙂

  2. SAO, is an amazing anime. I saw images from a website in early may, and decided to check it out when it started hitting the online waves in July. And gladly to say, I was not disappointed the least. I even found the Light novels it was based on. (yes there is a manga, but all the story was originally a light novel series) and I am really, REALLY hoping they smart up and continue it. The GGO arc is amazing as well, and I would love to see it translated into a visual format. All in all, this is a must watch for any avid anime fan.
